On my grandfathers grave I did NOT get any of my TGC information from your soft draw video, though people could easily get that impression if they have seen both videos.

I guess if two people independently come to the exact same conclusions then maybe there's something to it. :D

BTW, also would like to mention that my backswing video in 2006 I talked about applying force halfway back in the golf swing and then letting momentum finish the backswing. So yes, someone else was thinking of it. Glad to know I wasn't the only one. ;)

Has to be the over-rotated left arm flying wedge. Brian worked to get rid of mine in June and for the most part it was gone. Played after a three week layoff and it came back with a roaring vengeance. Nothing I tried worked,
every attempt at pivoting produced either a fat shot or pull hook. The only way I could hit the ball was to stop pivoting and flip the face closed. The club was so open, I understood why Woods has such a hard time hitting his driver. Brian, how about a top ten list? top ten ways to eliminate the over-rotated left arm flying wedge. Help, I am desparate.

Friday I shot 45/37 for an 82. A good round for me. The back nine was the best ever. I have a question for someone to explain, if you can, why what happened happened. Here is the story.

I started out on the front nine 8-over on the first 5 holes. I could not get the ball in play off the tee. My tee shots were slight, dainty (i.e. short) push fades/slices. I use the NHA backswing with a little pop out. My tendency is to throw the club down the target line away from my body, which I think keeps me from closing the club face at impact.

After 5 holes of pure frustration, I remember to swing left. I do two things. I set the ball as forward as I can in my set up and on a high tee to insure that I hit up on the ball. And I concentrate on moving my hands and arms left after impact; really I start swinging left from the top. I focus on losing sight of my hands as they turn left around my body through impact.

Immediately, I started hitting the ball straight as an arrow, with a slight pull. My club face was closing properly, and I was getting good distances, as far as I have ever hit it. I finished the last 13 holes with a birdie, 3 bogies, and 9 pars. And I took more money from my playing partners than I have ever done before.

Part of my good round was the result of a short-game that was outstanding during that round. I recently took a lesson from another forum contributor here in North Carolina, TeacherFitter, who revolutionized my short game. On the back nine, I took 15 putts, six two-putts and 3 one-putts. I want to give him credit.

Still, here is my question (please excuse the length of my email): Why does swinging left do what it does, which was for me, to enable me to square the clubface at impact? Is it the tumble? Can you swing left too much? I have NHA where BM talks about the "Yellow Brick Road," but I am trying to understand why swinging left worked.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

These "so-called" scientific methods MISS Jorgensen's assertions completely.

Brian, I have read Jorgensen's stuff and think it's great. I've also spent some time with Cochran, who doesn't suffer fools gladly--which I found out when I tried to explain to him one of my early opinions of how I think the golf swing should be described (not in terms of the math but how, as a golf instructor, I would go about optimizing a student's swing). He only partially lit up when I adjusted my explanation to include the analogy of the hammer thrower. At least he told me I was on the right track, and I think I have a better handle on it now....some 9 years later.

Firstly, I'm a broken down old range pro, not a scientist, so even if I tend to use some scientific terminology to communicate what I'm thinking, I don't presume to use any scientific method, nor do I feel that Jorgensen's assertions are the absolute gold standard, so it's likely that I'll appear to miss them. But I think you may have missed my point also.

Jorgensen took the two-pendellum model and adjusted it such that there was a linear shift factored in at the center pivot or "hub", and by doing so, his calculated clubhead speeds and the actual clubhead speeds were in very good agreement. But, he readily concedes that, in reality, the hub is displaced along a curved line or arc, which is to say that the hub is merely displaced, in the horizontal plane and vertical plane.

This type of displacement, combined with the fact that it starts with a positive acceleration and is abruptly followed by a negative acceleration, is starting to make it sound like a kind of third pendellum. In other words, he is modeling the left shoulder joint which is moving in a curvilinear fashion toward the target, but mostly rotating.

Now, he attributes the left shoulder motion (the linear portion) to an overall shift of the golfer's body toward the target, which I have no problem with, and happen to think is a very optimized way to hit the ball, but I don't think this is the main function of weight shift, especially since all it has done is add to potential clubhead speed by %10 or so but has done nothing for precision of clubhead/clubface delivery. If we move targetward with a large portion of our mass, then our weight is shifted incidentally, but so what?

On the other hand, if our main goal in the golf swing is to create large angular momentum through a kinetic chain and the only way to do that is too control very precisely the movements of the large proximal segments, then we can only do that if we can use the friction under our feet. For example, we can only brace/stall our left leg such that the pelvis slows down and tranfers energy to the shoulders, and arms, etc, IF the left foot won't slip. In order for the foot to not slip, we must have some amount of pressure/force downward to get the static friction high enough for the purpose. How do we raise the friction? Move some weight on top of it.

Brian, what say you?

To All Brian Manzella Academy Instructors and Members!

First I'm 52 years old. Over the last month or so I have developed severe arthritis in my right hand. It is getting very difficult and painful just to grip the club, let alone excute a golf shot. I would appreciate any and or all recommendations to help relieve the pain.

If you recommend a grip, if it's not against the rules please provide manufacturer and model #. Be as specific as possible.

Any other recommends other than grip are welcome as well.

Don't want to quit but with the Manzella neutral grip, it is extremely painful to grip a club.

Thank you,

Well, I just finished up today. Just thought I'd share a few things.

First, what I learned about myself. Im very comfortable in those surroundings. Ive always enjoyed spectators at sporting events. I pitched in front of 5000 people against China in the Pony League World Series at 13 so its not something new. The problem is going into the events with a respectable game. The best I played was in 2003 in Erie when I was on the front page of the leaderboard for most of the event.

Coming off a good win and even better ballstriking last week I was really looking forward to this week. Secretly I thought i could contend. But 3 days of lessons and one Monday qualifier caddy job (for a student of mine) left me with some degree of limited practice. I was unable to recapture the same feels and regressed into the same underturned, tugging, backed up move that has plagued me my whole life. I birdied my first two holes but fought the swing and putter the whole day and one loose swing (triple bogey) had me reeling with a 76.

Played better in the second round. -3 thru 14. Gunned a birdie putt on 15 trying to make the cut and 3 putted. Mathmatically eliminated I kinda sleptwalked thru the last 4 and posted 72. Truthfully a very disappointing event altogether.

About the tour: Many more foreign born players then my last event (2006) White belts, undersized shirts, J. Lindenburg pants as far as the eye can see so I need to fashion up. Swings were fast on the whole but alot of solid moves. I may go out and watch some tomorrow. Typically though, the grillroom stories from the leaders involved alot of made 30 footers and chips. But there are some steady rounds too. (not to imply that everyone is getting it done with crazy stuff) More triples and doubles here than Im sure they are used to with all the OB and hazards and slopes.

A side note: You cant believe how many guys aim left and start the ball right. If anyone has a thought or question please chime in

Could this be the reason i come across the ball at impact?
