This shot went left - if Phil had aimed and swung right with this downward hit - a straight shot no?

I dont know. I think he's so steep and narrow that he backs up and works under it and opens the face.

I agree that Phil gets really steep there. Can you expand a bit on what you mean by "backs up"?

Not trying to be mean here but you can't possibly tell the difference between a few degrees of clubpath or clubface looking from a video like that which can influence the ball flight greatly
